Site history, in which the Butcher's Run takes place every year is very interesting, although not always unambiguous and easy to tell. Generally, in this area, the progressive colonization of Wallachian peoples met with Poles, here some of them ended their journey. On the way, they took over the language partly from Romanians, partly from the Balkan peoples, partly from us - the Western and Eastern Slavs (specifically: Ukrainians). And that was the last link, the tragic conflict between the Polish communist authorities and the Hutsul people (that is, the aforementioned Wallachians), which here was recognized as Ukrainians (because they spoke Hutsul, which is recognized by Ukrainian linguists as a Ukrainian dialect).
Speaking of large, very much in short, after UPA soldiers killed General Karol Świerczewski, the Vistula operation began for good, as a result of which several dozen villages were displaced and destroyed. After this lengthy introduction ...
One of such villages is Jaworzec, which is worth taking a trip to while in the area, for example, before or after the Butcher.
After the Bieszczady Mountains, especially out of season, the best way to get around is by car (or by bike, or on foot. But the car wins nevertheless). I suggest abandoning the car at the store in Kalnica (it is located right next to the reflection from the main road - DW897).
Kalnica is an interesting name, it is connected with names such as Kalisz and Białykał and is associated with the word "kał", which used to mean so much, what "mud", Kalnica is a place, where is the river (Wetlina) she was often confused. However, we will deal with the river later. For now, we run quietly along the road to the north, no trail. after approx. 2,5 kilometers, we will reach a fork in the road, here we stick to the right. A bit further we will reach the bridge, it is worth stopping on it and taking a look down, if the water is clear, the cross section of the Carpathian flysch rocks is beautifully visible (from which all kinds of Beskids are made). We will pass the sign a few steps further, which you will find as an illustration for this description, and a bit more place, where the charcoal is burned.
The forest road continues to the north, and there is a black trail along it. We are ignoring this trail for now, we go directly to the remains of the village. We cross a muddy road, on the right there is an old cemetery, on it a wooden cross. Attention! You can fall into some old cellars covered only with boards. From the cemetery, let's go to the cross commemorating the abolition of serfdom, and further towards the church and a reservoir built relatively recently.
On the site of a burnt church (st. Great Martyr Dmitri) only the foundation and the iron cross remained.
On the way, you can still meet quickly (a cottage) in reconstruction (state in the fall 2016).
On the way back, it is worth visiting the shelter (the trail goes slightly uphill, the hostel is hard to miss). It is not in the best condition, although it is still under renovation. However, they are worth visiting, service is ok, autumn menu 2016 it was narrow, well okay.
We return to the car at a leisurely pace following our own traces
